Literally translated from Sranan Tongo, Swit Watra means "sweet or delicious water." Swit Watra came to Suriname from Africa and is still used today. The Swit Watra is a well-known wasi, or bathing ritual, traditionally performed on special occasions throughout the year. For example, on New Year's Eve, it's traditional to bathe in the Swit Watra. It's a way to leave the old behind and start the year with a fresh start. The start of a new job, a birthday, or a new school year is also a great opportunity for a Swit Watra.
